2020 Millage Renewal

Operating Millage Renewal

Hello Redford Union Families and Staff,

I certainly hope each of you and your families are safe and well, and have been able to enjoy at least some of what the summer months in Michigan provide.  Since the June 30th departure of Dr. Sarena Shivers, it has been my pleasure to continue to work in Redford Union with an expanded role as Interim Superintendent.

As our staff continues to work on the development of the District's Return to School plan, please know we are working towards a plan that will hopefully meet the expressed preference of at least a large majority of our students and families while also maintaining a focus on the health and safety of our students and staff.

Today, I would like to encourage you to Please Vote on August 4th as the ballot includes an

Operating Millage Renewal that is critical to our District operations.  Some additional information regarding this important ballot issue is included below:

Operating Millage Renewal

  • The non-homestead operating millage renewal on the Tuesday, August 4, 2020, ballot will help Redford Union Schools pay for critical needs, such as educational programs, teacher salaries and other operating expenses.
  • This is NOT a tax increase
  • The Operating Millage is a Renewal in place since 1994
  • This is a renewal of millage that has been in place.  Not a new millage.
  • This funding source is critical and necessary to district operations.
  • The tax is not levied on homeowners.  It is assessed only on non-principal residence property (e.g. business property, second homes or rental property, etc.).  Homeowners do not pay the tax.
  • Stated on the ballot the District is prohibited by law from a levy of more than 18 mills.  The remainder of the authorized mills cannot be levied unless or until it is reduced by Headlee
  • Investing in our schools through this operating millage renewal will help us attract and retain families and businesses in our township, foster strong neighborhoods, and keep our property values strong.
  • Strong schools make our community a great place to live, raise a family, work or start a new business.

Thank you in advance for making your voice heard at the polls on August 4th.  Go Panthers!!

Jasen M. Witt, J.D.
